Brickell Neighborhood History Tour Route

Brickell Neighborhood History Tour Route

Once referred to as Southside, the Brickell Neighborhood is one of Miami’s most historic areas. Dating back more than 2000 years, the south bank of the Miami River provided a central location for the Tequesta tribe to establish their settlement. It was this central location that the Brickell family found so attractive when they purchased land and settled in the area in January of 1871.

Join me for a walking tour that begins at the Miami Circle, continues south on Brickell Avenue to SE Twelfth Terrace, and concludes at the promenade just north of Eighth Street and Biscayne Bay. The tour will tell the story of the area as it has evolved from an upscale, single-family residential area to the Manhattan of the South.

The tour will feature the following locations:

  • Brickell Point and the discovery of the Miami Circle.
  • Brickell Park and the family Mausoleum.
  • Architecture and history of Brickell Avenue south of the Miami River.
  • First Presbyterian Church on Brickell Avenue.
  • Brickell Bridge Restaurant and Dinner Bell Charlie.
  • The Brickell family homes along Brickell Avenue.
  • Miss Harris School on Brickell Avenue.
  • USDA Experimental Station on Brickell Avenue.
  • Motels along the avenue during the middle decades of the last century.
  • Jackson’s Surgical Office (Now DHT headquarters).
  • Four Ambassadors and the Brickell / Bulmer Apartments.
  • Brickell Key on Claughton Island.
  • Many more topics.

The walking tour will take 2 – 2.5 hours and will be informative and entertaining. The guide will point out parts of the neighborhood that were featured in movies and television shows and will discuss development and the evolution of Brickell’s skyline.
