Brickell Avenue Tour Route

Brickell Avenue Tour Route

This tour will tell the story of the Brickell Avenue corridor from the Miami River to Fourteenth Street. The tour will begin inside the historic Dr. James Jackson surgical center, which is now the office of Dade Heritage Trust. You will learn about Miami’s pioneer physician and how his home and surgical center was moved from downtown Miami to Southside (aka Brickell), in 1916.

The tour will proceed down Brickell Bay Drive where the attendee will hear the stories of the Pearson Mansion, Ocean Ranch Motel and see several film locations for the show “Burn Notice”.  It will proceed into the Four Ambassadors where the tour goer will see where Martin Luther King conducted non-violence seminars during the 1968 Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

The tour will proceed to the Miami Circle and Brickell Park where attendees will learn about Brickell Key on Claughton Island. The story of the Miami Circle on Brickell Point covers more than two-thousand years of history. See one of the last structures on Brickell Point that still reside in the neighborhood today.

Visit a church that is home to one of the oldest congregations in Miami. The First Presbyterian Church once resided in downtown Miami but moved to the Brickell neighborhood in the late-1940s. Across the street from the church is the location of a restaurant that was once run by the founder of Burger King. Hear the story of “Dinner Bell” Charlie and how he kept the restaurant in business.

The tour continues down Brickell Avenue exploring the locations of homes, schools and other institutions that have made Brickell one of the most interesting neighborhoods in the country. The tour will highlight the changes in the neighborhood in the past twenty years. This tour is co-sponsored by the Miami-History Blog and Dade Heritage Trust. Each tour attendee will get a list of articles that provide the stories of many of the locations featured on the tour.

Hope you can join us to learn the fascinating history of the Brickell Avenue Neighborhood from the Miami River to Fourteenth Street. The next Brickell neighborhood tour will focus on an area that was once consider Miami’s Gold Coast.
