Miami Mayor EG Sewell Dies in 1940

On April 1st, 1940, Miami was stunned by the news that the city’s mayor, pioneer Everest G. Sewell, had suffered a heart attack. He would die at Jackson Memorial Hospital on April 2nd.

E.G. Sewell was recognized as one of the early business pioneers of Miami. He and his brother had opened up a number of clothing and shoe stores on Flagler Street shortly before incorporation of the City of Miami in 1896.

Everest Sewell also served three terms as Mayor of Miami. He was considered one of the great advocates of the city during the building boom and collapse in the 1920s and 1930s. His terms as Mayor were as follows:

  • January 1st, 1927 – January 1st, 1929
  • January 1st, 1933 – January 1st, 1935
  • January 1st, 1939 – April 2nd, 1940
