The Florida Department of Transportation is accepting bids to replace the 1.4 mile stretch of I-395 between I-95 and the MacArthur Causeway. The prevailing thought is that the design must make aesthetics and connectivity between the south and north side of the bridge of primary importance.

One of the concepts of the new design will be to reclaim valuable urban land for public use that was taken away with large embankments and forbidding overpasses when the current road was erected in the 1960s. There is a strong desire to reconnect streets in Overtown that were taken away with the current road.

One plan calls for the new highway to be built just north of the existing highway. Upon completion, the old highway will be demolished, with traffic being shifted to the new design. The Florida DOT hopes to have a contract signed and construction to begin in 2017. Construction is expected to last 5 years.
